Exploring the Charms of Cabeceiras de Basto: Unveiling the Treasures of Braga's Region

The municipality of Boschtoy is located in the transition zone between the provinces of Menu Antracis and Munch. It is characterized by lush valleys and mountains, and is home to quaint villages. In the 12th century, Benedictine monks founded a large monastery in Boschtoy. Despite being located far from major urban centers, the monastery was welcoming and conducive to contemplation and inspiration.

The name Boschtoy refers to a loose Italian warrior. Legend has it that in defense of the monastery against the Moors, the abbot shouted, "Up to this point in the name of San Miguel!" This phrase now personifies the local people, and a statue of the warrior stands in the public square. The intense aromas from the gardens and the ringing of church bells inspire dreams, passions, and stories of the people.

The monastery of San Miguel de Colores is a masterpiece of baroque architecture. It houses a church, a museum of sacred art, a town hall, and a local secondary school. Designed by architect Andres Wash, the current building dates back to the 18th century and was listed in 1933. The museum of sacred art contains a collection of paintings and sculptures of enormous value.

As visitors wander around Boschtoy, they soon realize why the Benedictine monks chose this land. It is a rich and tranquil zone where it is possible to commune with higher powers. The northern part of the municipality is part of the Set of the Cabarez de Boschtoy, which offers hiking trails that lead visitors to surprising and unexpected places. Here, unique landscapes and ancient traditions can be found.

In the village of Coccozello, in the parish of Buccleuch, a 20-meter-long granary supported on twelve pillars can be seen. The local women in Buccleuch masterfully perform ancestral tasks such as washing, carding, spinning, weaving, and knitting at the Casa de la Lana Wool Museum. The Jobwil Do Pal or stick game is a cultural demonstration of an ancient ritual in defense of the honor and dignity of the people.

The Set of the Cabarez is also home to various wildlife species, such as sheep, goats, oxen, and cows, which pasture and roam freely. Visitors can also spot wild boar, deer, rabbits, and many other wildlife species. The local environmental education center allows visitors to appreciate some of these species of native fauna and flora.
