Castro Marín: Exploring the Rich History of Portugal

Castro Marín, located in the Faro district of the Algarve region in Portugal, is a municipality and town that offers a captivating blend of historical landmarks and cultural experiences. 1. Church of Nuestra Señora de los Mártires

At the heart of Castro Marín lies the Church of Nuestra Señora de los Mártires, the principal religious temple in the town. Built during the 18th and 19th centuries, the church showcases stunning architectural details. Unfortunately, in 1960, a fire destroyed some of its precious elements. Visitors can admire the prominent bell tower, adorned with a false carabuya, and explore the chapels, which house images of Saint Gabriel from the 15th century, Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación, and the martyrs from the 16th century.

2. San Sebastián Fortress

The San Sebastián Fortress, constructed in the mid-17th century, stands as a testament to Castro Marín's defensive history. The fortress was built to reinforce the city's defense during the Wars of the Reapers. Featuring an irregular layout with five defensive bastions, the castle played a crucial role in safeguarding the border. However, please note that the fortress is not accessible for visits.

The castle boasts a square shape with circular turrets at the corners and two gates. While most of the remaining ruins date back to the 17th century, additional walls were added at the request of King João IV.
