Exploring Aveiro and Costa Nova: A Colorful Journey through Portugal's Hidden Treasures

Discovering Aveiro and Costa Nova
Welcome travelers, Mundo por Descubrir is back in Portugal, specifically in the northern region, to visit two of the most typical municipalities in the country: Aveiro and Costa Nova. In these two days, we will explore their most touristy spots as well as venture into lesser-known areas. Of course, we will also indulge in their delicious local cuisine.
Day 1: Aveiro
The adventure begins early in the morning as our travelers set out to make the most of their first day. They start by admiring the famous canal of Aveiro, which they will later navigate in more detail. Before diving into the city's historical center, they enjoy a simple yet filling breakfast at Hotel Las Américas.
The narrow streets of Aveiro's old town, with their colorful facades and enchanting charm, captivate our travelers. They stumble upon many shops offering a typical sweet from the city called "ovos moles." These sweets are made with a curious combination of rice paper filled with egg yolk and sugar. Although the travelers were not particularly fond of them, they admit that they were worth a try.

As they continue to explore the central streets of Aveiro, they find themselves in front of the Misericordia Church, the most beautiful church in the city. Its 17th-century architecture is adorned with stunning azulejos (painted ceramic tiles) that cover both the ceilings and walls.
But the highlight of their day is the traditional boat ride on the Moliceiros, iconic in Aveiro since the city is often referred to as the "Venice of Portugal" due to its network of canals. The travelers embark on a 45-minute route with a knowledgeable guide who shares fascinating stories about the history and importance of these boats, the city, its salt marshes, and canals.
After the boat ride, they visit the Maritime Museum, which exceeded their expectations. It showcases a large collection of maritime artifacts and features an aquarium dedicated to codfish, a traditional and culturally significant food in Portugal.

To end their day in Aveiro on a high note, the travelers indulge in the city's gastronomy, specifically at Restaurante O Moliceiro. Specializing in bacalhau (codfish) dishes, they enjoy a delicious feast and rave about the attentive and warm service provided by the staff. The dishes, particularly the bacalhau com natas (codfish with cream), impress them and leave a lasting memory of Aveiro's culinary delights.
Day 2: Costa Nova
On the second day, the travelers venture a little over 10 kilometers from Aveiro to Costa Nova, a picturesque municipality famous for its colorful striped houses. They start their day with a walk along the beach, which is characterized by spectacular dunes and wooden walkways that allow visitors to admire the natural landscape.
After the beach walk, they explore the iconic Costa Nova promenade, where the charming striped houses can be found. These houses, known as "palheiros," were originally used by fishermen to store their fishing gear. Today, many of these houses are used as vacation rentals.
The travelers cannot resist trying another delicious local specialty in Costa Nova: the "tripas." These sweet treats resemble crepes but have a unique flavor and texture that, according to them, surpasses that of traditional crepes. They visit Cera Tripas, a local establishment known for making these delicacies, and enjoy the classic ovos (egg) and chocolate flavors.
Continuing their exploration, they visit the Toy Museum, also known as the Brincar Museum, a magical place that takes them back to their childhood. They immerse themselves in an interactive experience, playing with toys, exploring different themed rooms, and unleashing their imagination. The highlight of the museum is a life-sized dollhouse where visitors can become part of the game.
As the day turns into night, the travelers make sure not to miss the impressive Forum Aveiro, the first open-air shopping center in Europe. The vibrant colors and lively atmosphere attract them, and they spend some time shopping and soaking up the ambiance.
With their time in Aveiro and Costa Nova coming to an end, the travelers reflect on their two-day adventure filled with beautiful canals, colorful houses, delicious food, and enchanting experiences. They recommend spending more than just a day in Aveiro, as both Aveiro and Costa Nova complement each other perfectly, offering much more than the typical tourist attractions.
