Exploring Montemor-O-Velho Castle: A Journey Through History and Legends

Welcome to virtual tour number seven! Today, we will be exploring the beautiful castle of Montemor-O-Velho, located in the central region of Portugal. Situated halfway between Coimbra and Figuere de Foz, this castle holds great historical significance.

Built as part of the defensive line of Mundigo, the Castle of Montemor-O-Velho played a crucial role in protecting the region during periods of conflict. Through the years, it has become the subject of many tales and legends, reflecting the bravery and struggles of those who fought here.

Although not much of the original construction remains, the castle's current structure is a result of many medieval campaigns. Most of the buildings that can be seen today were erected in the 16th century and are currently undergoing restoration.

As you approach the castle, you'll come across the main entrance called Porta de Peste. Walking around the castle, you can't help but appreciate its grandeur, standing as a testament to 1109 years of history.

Inside the castle walls, you'll discover the palace that was built during the 12th century. This palace witnessed countless disagreements among royalty, with princes, princesses, kings, and queens finding themselves at odds within these walls.

One particularly notable story linked to Montemor-O-Velho Castle is the tragic love story of Pedro and Inês. It was within these walls that King Afonso IV ordered the death of Inês, the lover of his son, Pedro. This event marked one of the most chilling tales of love and betrayal in history.

In 1355, on a cold winter morning, King Afonso IV gathered with his counselors to decide the fate of Inês, daughter of an influential nobleman from Castile. Fearing that the illegitimate children of Pedro and Inês would threaten Portuguese independence, the decision to execute Inês was made. A few days later, her murder was carried out in Coimbra.

While touring the castle, it is also worth mentioning the Church of Santa Maria del Caso. Although it was unfortunately closed during this virtual tour, it stands as a reminder of the reconquest of Coimbra by Christians in 1064.

As a tour guide, I have had the pleasure of sharing the beauty and history of Montemor-O-Velho Castle with many visitors. The castle's imposing structure and the captivating stories associated with it never fail to fascinate.

Under normal circumstances, the castle hosts various events throughout the year, including a Christmas village, medieval recreations, markets, and even the Fortu Festival, which features electronic music and groundbreaking visual arts.

I hope you have enjoyed this virtual tour of Montemor-O-Velho Castle. Thank you for joining me and remember to keep an eye out for future adventures. See you soon!
