Inside the castle walls, you'll discover the palace that was built during the 12th century. This palace witnessed countless disagreements among royalty, with princes, princesses, kings, and queens finding themselves at odds within these walls.

One particularly notable story linked to Montemor-O-Velho Castle is the tragic love story of Pedro and Inês. It was within these walls that King Afonso IV ordered the death of Inês, the lover of his son, Pedro. This event marked one of the most chilling tales of love and betrayal in history.

In 1355, on a cold winter morning, King Afonso IV gathered with his counselors to decide the fate of Inês, daughter of an influential nobleman from Castile. While touring the castle, it is also worth mentioning the Church of Santa Maria del Caso. Although it was unfortunately closed during this virtual tour, it stands as a reminder of the reconquest of Coimbra by Christians in 1064.
